February 6, 2014 Winter activities at Cuchara Mountain Resort this year By Renee Rinehart The public is invited to enjoy the snow at Cuchara Mountain Resort this winter with a tubing hill, cross-country skiing and downhill “skinning” skiing. “The ski hill is open,” said owner Bruce Cantrell. “You are basically trespassing with permission.” Users will do so at their own liability. Bring your inner tube for a fun ride down the hill. Snow has been packed for the tubing hill, but there is no lift, so be prepared to walk up between joyful rides down. The hill is located in front of old lift #4. Downhill skiers can try out the hill using the skinning technique. Skiers equipped with alpine touring boots, which allow flexibility to move uphill, but can clamp down for the glide down-much like cross-country skis. Skins made of heavy-duty nylon affix to the ski base and allow easier movement both up and down the hill. Cross-country trails are also being groomed for winter enjoyment. Cantrel said he has hired a full-time person to monitor the mountain this winter to measure wind, moisture and natural weather patterns that may impact snow making operations in the future. Cuchara Mountain Resort is located west of Highway 12, just south of the Village of Cuchara. Reprinted with permission from The Signature Newspaper.
